Awakening is
a happy church. We love feasting. Christmas and New Year
are one of the most
exciting seasons in the year for both the children and the
adults at Awakening. This is the time in which we celebrate
the life that came to us through the incarnation of the Son
of God. It is time to reflect on the miracle of his birth
and its meaning for us all, but also time to give account
to our personal and corporate successes and loses and change
our calendars with hope, believing that the New Y?ar is a
new gift from God, which we are to open with excitement.
Just like every year, there was a long chain of services and get togethers before we entered into 2005.
Some of the highlights of this Christmas for Awakening was a special service which we organized with „Salvation” Church of God, a sister church here in Stara Zagora. We wanted to enter the Christmas season celebrating our unity as believers. We were welcomed by pastor Kupenov to visit their church and have an evening of fellowship.
The next evening on the 24th of December we were at Awakening again. In this evening of expectation when all Bulgarian families are around the tables full with goods, we were in church and heard the testimony of the wise man. This was an unforgettable sermon in which our pastor recreated the story of Christ’s birth through the eyes of the wise man. We all felt as we were there close at the manger, kneeling down before the Savior of the World, bringing our best gifts to Him.
On the very day of Christmas the church got together for fellowship. We had a special Christmas fellowship party. Again, it was important to us to be together.
The children’s program was also very special. They reminded us of the birth of our Savior through songs and poems.
Our worship team had also a special selection of songs, both traditional and modern. Our pastor’s massage was highly inspirational. We were reminded that Christmas is about Christ and our intimacy with Him, who brings all things together in Himself.
New Year’s eve was another reason for us to get together as one big family. There was much joy in this evening. People brought much food and drinks to share with one another and those who have very little. There was a great program which some of our young people did put together. The funniest moments of our church life was displayed on a big video wall. They were so many! There were awards like – preacher of the year, best family, mom of the year, the most contagious smile etc.
More than 80 people entered in the new year holding hands in prayer and recommitting their lives to Christ and one another. That was a sacred moment. In those few moments in which people were shooting fireworks in the sky, we were confessing our love and devotion to God and the other.
This is church – sharing your life, your best and your worst moments, with those who love the Savior and journey with us to the eternal city, whose Architect and Builder is God!
